Avengers End Game and more reviews

Welcome to my monthly movie feature! I am a big movie fan and I have a monthly cinema card. This means I can visit my local cinema as many times a month as time will allow, so I thought that I would give my thoughts on the films which I have watched each month. However, this is just my opinion!

Avengers: End Game

Avengers: EndgameThe long awaited follow up to the fantastic Avengers: The Infinity Stones, which left us on a massive cliff hanger last year! I was so excited to see this movie and find out what was going to happen.

It was an epic end to a brilliant series of movies from Marvel Studios. I loved it and I am therefore making this film, my favourite of the month.

Popcorn, five stars

Avengers end game

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! It was amazing. Carrying on from the last movie Thanos clicked his fingers and half of the world died so five years later some of the remaining Avengers went to find the other remaining Avengers and iron man also known as Tony stark found a way to go back in time. So cap, iron man, hulk, arrow, ant man etc. went to retrieve the stones before Thanos did, but things did not go to plan…

I really enjoyed it I hope they make more if I had to rate this movie out of 5, I would say 5 stars

Detective Pikachu

POKEMON Detective PikachuThe first Pokemon live-action film featuring Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds. In a world where Pokemon exist, there is a city where Pokemon can live and work alongside humans which is the first of it’s kind but is all as it seems?

Very funny and a nice watch, even if you are not obsessed with pokemon!

This movie is AMAZING!!!! I loved it. It made me laugh a lot, but it was a bit emotional. The film is about a boy called Tim he doesn’t have a Pokémon partner but then something happens… I defiantly enjoyed the movie, I enjoyed it so much I saw it twice so give this movie 5 out 0f 5 stars!

The Secret Life of Pets 2

The Secret Life Of Pets 2I had been waiting for this movie to come out and it does not disappoint. I was a huge fan of the first film. as being a huge dog lover, it was great fun to watch the characters in the film behaving as they do in real life and the ideas of what our pets might really be thinking and getting up to when we are not home.

This film had a few different storylines happening at once and was extremely funny, much like the first film. I really enjoyed the film and this was only slightly beaten by the Avengers movie for my ‘movie of the month’.

Another month with only three movies seen. I use to always manage at least five! I need to up my game and manage my time better as there have been a few movies over the last few months which I missed at the cinema.

Have you seen any of these or have you seen something else this month? Let me know your thoughts!

My April 2019 Movie Review

April 2019 movie review

Welcome to my monthly movie feature! I am a big movie fan and I have a monthly cinema card. This means I can visit my local cinema as many times a month as time will allow, so I thought that I would give my thoughts on the films which I have watched each month. However, this is just my opinion!

Shazam! April 2019 movie

A comedy superhero film with a difference. This superhero is actually a fourteen-year-old boy who changes into a fully grown man when he says the magic word! I really enjoyed this film, it was funny and it had an interesting storyline. It is a 12A which means that children that are younger than twelve can watch it with an adult, but I would be careful, as there were some scenes which would be scary for younger children. At the end of the movie, there is a rather strange cutscene after the credits, which could be indicating that there will be a follow-up film.

Wonder Park April 2019 movieWonder Park

Wonder park is about an imagined theme park which actually comes to life. I normally like kids films as I am a big kid myself but unfortunately, I was not a fan of this film. I am sure that young children would enjoy it but I found it boring and ended up falling asleep in the cinema!

Little April movie two women and a girlLittle

Little is a comedy which centres around the life of Jordan Sanders who after a difficult school experience, decided that no one would ever get the chance to be mean to her again, as she would get them first! Grown-up Jordan played by Regina Hall wakes up as her 13-year-old self (Marsai Martin) two days before an important pitch to save her company. With the help from her long-suffering assistant, April (Issa Rae) to help her find a way to get back to her grown-up self.

This was really funny with an entertaining, enjoyable storyline. The film has underlying themes of being yourself and not letting others change who you are, which is important at a time when people are influenced by others more than ever before. Popcorn, five stars

Only three movies this month as time has been short. Have you seen any of these? Or are you planning too? I would love to hear what you think.

The Lego Movie 2

The LEGO Movie 2As the name suggests, this was a follow up to the first Lego Movie and was just as enjoyable. This time Emit and friends have to face Aliens from another planet behind the stair gate. It is a great film for kids and one that adults can also enjoy. This film includes another very catchy song, although not quite as catchy as the song from the first movie ‘everything is awesome’, which is currently on replay in my head as I type!

Girl siting in cinema and popcorn The Lego Movie 2.

I really love the film because it’s funny and really well animated. It made me laugh and I really enjoyed it!! In the lego movie 2 some aliens came and kept destroying the town. They would re-build, then an alien came and took all the heroes away and it was up to Emit to save them.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars!

The Kid Who Would Be King

The Kid Who Would Be KingThis film is loosely based on the myth of Merlin and the knights of the round table as a follow up to the myth in modern times. The story centres around a twelve-year-old boy called Alex who stumbles across a sword in a stone and pulls it out. He then discovers that he has pulled out Excalibur and a whole adventure begins to unfold. The movie is rated PG and I would definitely be careful of letting very young children watching this movie as there were some quite scary scenes.

It was a very enjoyable, interesting film which had some very funny moments in it. The underlying themes to the movie are based on believing in yourself, overcoming challenges and friendship. I would definitely recommend this movie to a family audience.

Instant Family

Instant FamilyInstant family stars Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byme as Pete and Ellie, who decide to adopt a child. Instead of adopting one young child as first planned, they end up taking on three siblings, one of whom is a teenager which has hilarious consequences!  The film was absolutely brilliant, I laughed and I cried and I am awarding it my film of the month badge. It also shines an important light onto the fostering and adoption service and the need for more parents. Fantastic!!Popcorn, five stars

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden WorldThis is the third instalment of the DreamWorks movie franchise. The story is centred on a Viking boy called Hiccup and his dragon, toothless. Most humans are using dragons for fighting and labour, but Hiccup and his people have learned to respect and live with dragons and try to rescue other dragons which need help. In this film, the clan face their biggest threat yet and there is also the introduction of a love interest for toothless.

This is the first of these films which I have seen, but I didn’t think that it was a problem as you could still follow the storyline without having seen the previous two films.  The film was good with some very cute scenes with the two dragons which are falling in love, which made me smile. There is also an underlying theme of learning to trust in yourself and that true love for someone can mean putting them above your own happiness and letting them go.

Girl siting in cinema and popcornHow To Train Your Dragon – The Hidden World

I don’t like it because it’s sad but it’s good but sad. It’s an animated film so it’s perfect for kids. It’s about some dragon hunters who hire a night furry killer and they try to destroy the dragons, so a young boy finds a special world for the dragons not to be harmed.

It did make me cry because I don’t like any film with animals being damaged or captured. So I would give this movie 4 out of 5 stars.

January 2019 movies

Popcorn and movie tickets for January movie review

Welcome to my monthly movie feature! I am a big movie fan and I have a monthly cinema card. This means I can visit my local cinema as many times a month as time will allow, so I thought that I would give my thoughts on the films which I have watched each month. However, this is just my opinion so please don’t send me angry messages if you watch a movie which I have recommended and you did not actually like it!

Holmes and Watson

Holmes & WatsonWill Ferrell and John C. Reilly star in this comedy take on the Classic stories of Sherlock Holmes. I had been looking forward to seeing this as I am a fan of all of the Sherlock mysteries. My favourite movie genre is comedy so I thought that I was almost guaranteed a good watch.

How wrong could I be! I do not say this often but I thought that this film was absolutely terrible! The comedy was of a stupid nature and not my kind of comedy at all. There was also a strange song in the middle of the film which seemed totally irrelevant to the film. If I could have left the cinema I would have done, but I knew that my husband was unavailable to collect me until the end of the movie, so I stayed hoping it would get better. Unfortunately for me, it did not. I would not recommend this movie as I feel that it was a waste of 90 minutes of my life which I will never get back!

AquamanThis is the story of Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa, who is Aquaman. We have previously seen Aquaman in other superhero films but in this film, we finally get to see the back story of Aquaman who has a human father and an Atlantian mother.  I really enjoyed the storyline of the film and it also had some fantastic visual effects too. As I am not a fan of watching fighting, there was a bit too much in the war scenes for my taste but other than that I loved it!

Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins ReturnsThe original Mary Poppins was one of my favourite films when I was a child, so I was very excited when I heard that they were making a sequel. This time Mary Poppins was played by Emily Blunt who did a superb job. Michael and Jane Banks are now grown up and Michael has his own children but is struggling after losing his wife. Mary Poppins returns to help the family with some assistance from her friend Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) who is a lamplighter. The film is full of colour, magic and song, just as you would expect and tied in nicely with the original film. It was also a lovely touch to see Dick Van Dyke make a brief appearance towards the end of the film.

Second Act

Popcorn, five stars

This was my type of film and was absolutely brilliant. Second Act is a comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and Vanessa Hudgens. The story centers around Mya (Jennifer Lopez) who has reached 40, but is being held back in her career, as she does not have a degree even though she has plenty of experience. The film gave me lots of laughs and was a great story with a great deeper meaning of remembering that every day when we wake up, we have another chance to be who we want to be. Second Act

October 2018 movie reviews

popcorn and movie tickets

Welcome to my monthly movie feature! I am a big movie fan and I have a monthly cinema card. This means I can visit my local cinema as many times a month as time will allow, so I thought that I would give my thoughts on the films which I have watched each month. However, this is just my opinion so please don’t send me angry messages if you watch a movie which I have recommended and you did not actually like it!

The House with a clock in its walls.

Jack Black stars as a warlock, Jonathan, living in a house previously owned by another warlock which has a clock inside the walls counting down to an unknown event. His ten year old nephew, Lewis, comes to stay and discovers that he can also learn to become a warlock. Jonathan, Lewis and Jonathans best friend, played by Cate Blanchett, try and solve the mystery of the clock in the walls of the house. This was a good movie which I enjoyed watching.

This is an animated movie about yeti’s who live high in the mountains and have heard stories of another species that they call ‘smallfoot’. A plane crashes near the mountain and one of the Yeti’s sees a human (smallfoot) and vows to prove that smallfoot exists. The film has some great songs in it and a great rap song which I really liked. There is a great cast of voices which include; Channing Tatum, James Corden and Zendaya. The film is really good and centres around the theme of friendship and difference.

A star is born

This was an amazing but highly emotional film! I must of cried for about the last 40 minutes of the film! The story is about the rise to stardom of Ally (Lady Gaga) which begins with a chance meeting with Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper). It is essentially a love story mixed with the story of Ally’s journey into fame. However, it is also really emotive giving insight to anyone who has a loved one who battles with addiction. It also has a great soundtrack to the movie too! This movie only just beat Venom to be my favourite of the month.

Johnny English strikes again.

This is the third movie in this series and this time we see Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) recalled to the secret service. This time his mission is to help stop a major cyber attack on the UK. Rowan Atkinson is brilliant as the bumbling accident prone agent. This was funny and is great for when you want to watch some silly fun.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.

This was the second film based on the famous book series written by R L Stine. This time the story centres around Slappy the ventriloquist doll who decides to bring all of the Halloween costumes and decorations to life. Three teenagers have to work together to save the day and there is a brief appearance from Jack Black near the end of the film. I watched the first film and I actually think that this one was better than the first. It is a good film with some funny moments but there are also some creepy moments in this movie so it might not be suitable for some young children. The film ended in a way that could indicate that another film will be made so you never know!

Another movie from the Marvel franchise. I was quite late at watching this as I was a bit on the fence but I am really glad that I watched it as I think that it is my favourite Marvel film so far. The story is based on organisms from space which can not survive on earth without combining with a human host. The film stars Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams. Tom Hardy is brilliant and as with most Marvel films their is some great comedy elements included as well. The film ends with an indication that there will be more to come, so fingers crossed.

What do you think? Do you think you will watch any of these? Or have you seen something that I have not mentioned here? I would love to hear from you so feel free to drop me a comment below or email me at denise@mumonamissionforabetterlife.co.uk

August 2018 movie reviews

Welcome to my monthly movie feature! I am a big movie fan and I have a monthly cinema card. This means I can visit my local cinema as many times a month as time will allow. So I thought that I would give my thoughts on the films which I have watched each month. However, this is just my opinion so please don’t send me angry messages if you watch a movie which I have recommended and you did not actually like it!

Hotel Transylvania 3: A monster vacation

FJ and I had been really looking forward to seeing this having already watched the first two movies and it did not disappoint us. One of the great things about this movie is that you do not need to have seen the other two movies to understand the plot as they are stand-alone movies. In this one like the title suggests the family decide to go on vacation. They book onto a cruise which is especially for monsters but get more than they bargained for as all is not as it would first appear! This is a great film which is very funny and really enjoyable to watch.

An action-packed movie starring the gorgeous Dwayne Johnson (the rock). This has a good storyline where the main character needs to break his way into a tower block to save his family. There were lots of bottom-clenching moments and it was a very enjoyable film.

Mamma Mia! Here we go again

This was the second in this series and I had not watched the first one. I only saw this one as CJ wanted to see it and unfortunately, it was not my cup of tea. The film is a musical set to ABBA songs and has a star-studded cast which includes Cher, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth. I normally like musicals but this was just too cheesy for me although CJ said that she enjoyed it.

Mission Impossible – Fallout

Another action movie which this time starred the fabulous Tom Cruise. This is the sixth film in the movie franchise and I must confess, the only one which I have seen. It is very much spy gadgets and action stunts but was actually really enjoyable to watch. I was very impressed with Tom Cruise and I think that he looks extremely good for 57!

The Darkest Minds

This was an amazing movie which left both me and CJ stunned at the end and desperate for a second film! In the film, there has been an unknown illness which affects children and results in some of the children developing abilities. The government fears these children and therefore have ordered that all children must live in a prison type camp. Some of the children who have exceptionable powers are to be executed. The film had me gripped throughout and I highly recommend it!
