Helping your child start again after moving somewhere new

It’s one of those parts of life that is daunting for every member of the family. When you decide to make the move to somewhere new for a better life, or because things are cheaper, the people it impacts the most are your children. Unfortunately however old or young they are, they will feel some negative effects. What can we do to help make our children see the benefits of starting again after moving somewhere new?

Finding That Right School Environment

One of the biggest stresses for children is going to a new school. This is why you’ve got to prepare in advance. Sometimes it’s about finding the right environment that nurtures them, either academically, or emotionally. When you look at places like Leicester High School for Girls, a primary school in Leicester high, that focuses on teaching girls, this might provide that environment they need, especially if your children have their own social anxieties. It’s a very difficult thing to get right, and no doubt, you’ve already thought about the schools and the quality of life that your children may have as a result of a new school. The right school environment can do so much.

Helping Your Child Express Their Feelings

They may be angry and they may be hurt. Whatever the issues are, helping your children to express their feelings means that you can help them to find positive solutions. Ultimately they will feel upset that they are leaving friends behind and this is normal. You have to let them vent that anger or frustration. They will come around eventually. Even if you are not a homeschooler, you may find it useful to take a look at some of the ideas that we used when we were learning about emotions in order to help your child understand what they are feeling.

Providing Enough Activities To Distract Everyone From The Stress

You can feel it in the weight of your chest, this almighty change that everyone is going through. As a result, you can help to soften the blow, either by finding ways to get involved in the community right away, or finding things in the new place that you could all do. If you’re moving to a place like London, as vast and intimidating is it may be, there’s an abundance of great things to do! From the markets to the free museums, there’s so much that everyone can get their teeth into. In fact, this may be the perfect way for you to just start again as a family.

Let Them Know You Are There For Them

In many ways, you will stick together as a family when moving to a new place. Letting your children know that you are there for them, added to the fact that they’ve yet to find their own feet, means that you can all stick together to support one another. Being there for them throughout this difficult time means that relationships can solidify. As much of a change as it can be, when moving somewhere new to start again, you can help them in so many different ways to be a new person. Perhaps encourage a more active lifestyle, or give them more opportunities in life by going to this new place.

Remember it can take a while for them to come around to the idea of a new place. Not many children are open to the idea of change, but by being there for them, you will give him that support they need.

We moved house about 6 weeks ago and we prepared my girls well I think. We kept them involved with everything and even though we moved just over 150 miles they have settled in so well. I think it helped that we had been planning the move for about a year x
